Orthotic Services Michigan
Custom Solutions for Movement and Support
Not every mobility challenge requires a prosthesis. Sometimes, what you need is the right support to help your existing limbs function better. At Ropp Orthopedic Clinic, we create custom orthotic devices that don’t just brace or support—they restore your ability to move freely and live independently.
Under the direction of Stephanie Miner, our Director of Orthotics and ABC Certified Orthotist, we provide comprehensive orthotic services for patients throughout Southeast Michigan. Stephanie brings a unique combination of technical expertise and genuine compassion, believing that “we are put on this rock to help others.” This philosophy drives everything we do in our orthotic department.
Understanding
Orthotic Devices and
How They Help
Orthotics are external devices designed to support, align, prevent, or correct deformities or improve the function of movable parts of the body. Unlike prosthetics, which replace missing limbs, orthotics work with your existing anatomy to improve function, reduce pain, and prevent further complications.
Our on-site fabrication lab means we can create, modify, and perfect your orthotic device without the delays common at other clinics. When you need an adjustment, we handle it immediately. When something isn’t quite right, we fix it now. This responsiveness makes all the difference in achieving optimal function.
Common
Conditions We Treat with Orthotic Devices
1. Foot Drop and Ankle
Instability
Foot drop—the inability to lift the front part of your foot—makes walking dangerous and exhausting. Every step becomes a deliberate and often challenging effort to avoid tripping. Ankle instability adds another layer of challenge, making you feel unsafe on any uneven surface.
We create custom AFOs (ankle-foot orthoses) that address these issues without unnecessary bulk or restriction. Our designs provide just enough support to ensure safe gait while preserving as much natural movement as possible.whether your foot drop results from a stroke, nerve damage, or other conditions, we’ll design an orthotic that restores confident walking.
2. Post-Stroke and Neurological Conditions
Stroke, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, and other neurological conditions often affect movement and muscle control. The right orthotic device can mean the difference between wheelchair dependence and walking independence.
Stephanie’s expertise in neuromuscular conditions means we understand the complex challenges you face. Spasticity that fights against movement. Weakness that requires support without adding weight. Sensory changes that affect balance and coordination. We design orthotics that address all these factors, not just the obvious mechanical issues.
Our neurological orthotic solutions work in harmony with physical therapy and medical treatment to maximize your functional recovery and independence.
3. Arthritis and Joint Degeneration
When arthritis attacks your joints, every movement becomes painful. Your body compensates with altered mechanics that create new problems. Before long, you’re dealing with pain not just in the affected joint, but throughout your body.
Custom orthotics can dramatically reduce arthritis pain by properly aligning joints, redistributing forces away from damaged areas, providing stability without restricting function, and preventing further joint damage. We create orthotic devices for knees, ankles, wrists, and other joints affected by arthritis, helping you maintain activity and independence despite joint degeneration.
4. Pediatric Orthotic Needs
Children with orthotic needs require special consideration. They’re growing rapidly, learning constantly, and need devices that support development without limiting exploration. Stephanie’s background in psychology combines with her orthotic expertise to provide exceptional pediatric care.
We treat conditions including clubfoot and other foot deformities, cerebral palsy and spasticity, developmental delays affecting mobility, scoliosis and spinal conditions, and various genetic and acquired conditions. Our pediatric orthotics are designed to be as normal-looking as possible, helping children fit in with peers while getting the support they need.
Types of
Orthotic Devices We Provide
Ankle Foot Orthoses
We offer multiple AFO designs including posterior leaf spring for mild foot drop, solid ankle for maximum stability, articulated for controlled motion, and ground reaction for knee stability. Each design serves specific needs, and we’ll explain exactly which type matches your condition and lifestyle.
Knee Ankle Foot Orthoses
When knee instability combines with ankle and foot issues, KAFOs provide comprehensive lower limb support. These devices extend from thigh to foot, controlling knee, ankle, and foot position throughout the gait cycle.
Back Braces and TLSOs
Back pain and spinal conditions can be debilitating. The right spinal orthosis provides the support that helps reduce pain and improve mobility while maintaining as much function as possible.
Foot Orthotics and Diabetic Inserts
Not all orthotic needs require large braces. Sometimes, the right foot orthotic can prevent or solve significant problems. We create custom foot orthotics for plantar fasciitis and heel pain, metatarsalgia and forefoot pain, diabetic foot protection, and various foot deformities.
Upper Extremity Orthoses
Arm, wrist, and hand orthoses help with conditions ranging from carpal tunnel syndrome to stroke recovery. We create custom wrist-hand orthoses (WHOs) for carpal tunnel and tendonitis, elbow orthoses for tennis elbow and cubital tunnel, shoulder orthoses for subluxation and weakness, and functional positioning splints.
Ropp's
Insurance Coverage for Orthotic Devices
Most insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid, cover medically necessary orthotic devices. Coverage typically includes custom-fabricated orthotics, repairs and adjustments, replacement when medically justified, and some off-the-shelf devices when appropriate.
Our experienced staff handles insurance paperwork, including prior authorizations, documentation requirements, and appeals when necessary. We’ll verify your benefits before beginning and explain any out-of-pocket costs clearly. Don’t let insurance concerns prevent you from getting the orthotic help you need—we’ll work with you to find solutions.
The
Ropp Approach to Orthotic Services
Comprehensive Evaluation
Your orthotic journey starts with Stephanie Miner's comprehensive evaluation. As an ABC Certified Orthotist with a Masters in Orthotics and Prosthetics from Eastern Michigan University, she brings both academic knowledge and practical expertise to every assessment. We evaluate not just the affected area but your entire body mechanics. How you walk, stand, and move all influence orthotic design. We consider your daily activities, work requirements, and personal goals. This holistic approach ensures your orthotic device addresses all your needs, not just the obvious ones.
Custom Design for Your Unique Needs
No two patients are identical, so why should their orthotics be? We create truly custom devices designed specifically for your anatomy, condition, and lifestyle. This means taking precise measurements and casts, selecting appropriate materials and components, designing for your specific activities, and incorporating your preferences and concerns. Stephanie works hand-in-hand with your healthcare team—physicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists—to ensure your orthotic device complements your overall treatment plan. This collaborative approach produces superior outcomes.
On-Site Fabrication for Perfect Fit
Our on-site fabrication lab is crucial for orthotic success. While other clinics send your measurements to distant facilities and hope for the best, we create your device right here. Stephanie can walk from the evaluation room to the lab, personally overseeing every aspect of fabrication. This enables immediate adjustments whenever needed for optimal comfort and function. custom modifications for unique needs, and same-day service for many devices. The difference this makes in achieving optimal fit and function cannot be overstated.
Why
Choose Ropp for Orthotic Devices in Michigan
Expertise That Makes a Difference
Orthotist Stephanie Miner brings a unique skill set to our team. Her Master’s in Orthotics ensures technical expertise, while her Psychology degree helps her understand patient concerns. This, combined with her certification, drives her exceptional, patient-focused care.
This blend of technical skill and human understanding produces superior outcomes. Patients consistently report that Stephanie is the first orthotist who truly listened, creating effective solutions that have a real, positive impact on their lives and daily function.
Family-Owned Care vs Corporate Medicine
As a family-owned clinic, we operate differently than hospital systems or corporate chains. We don’t have quotas to meet or shareholders to please. Our only goal is helping you achieve better function and less pain.
This means spending whatever time necessary to get your orthotic right, making adjustments until you’re completely satisfied, providing honest recommendations without sales pressure, and building long-term relationships, not just transactions. When you work with Ropp, you become part of our extended family of patients who know they can count on us.
Proven Results for Complex Cases
Over 30 years, we’ve developed expertise in challenging orthotic cases that other clinics struggle with. Unusual anatomies that don’t fit standard designs. Multiple conditions requiring creative solutions. Previous orthotic failures that need fresh approaches. Pediatric cases requiring special consideration.
We don’t turn away difficult cases. We see them as opportunities to make a difference. If other clinics have told you “nothing can be done” or “this is the best we can do,” get a second opinion from Ropp.

The
Complete Orthotic Device Process
1. Initial Consultation and Assessment
Your journey starts with a free consultation where we listen to your story, understand your challenges, evaluate your condition, and discuss your goals. If you have previous orthotics, we’ll analyze what worked and what didn’t.
Stephanie performs a thorough physical assessment examining range of motion, muscle strength, joint stability, gait patterns, and functional limitations. We may also review medical records, imaging studies, and therapy notes to fully understand your condition.
2. Casting and Measurement
Creating an effective orthotic requires capturing your anatomy precisely. We use various techniques including traditional plaster casting for exact contours, 3D scanning for complex geometries, direct molding for immediate capture, and measurements for specific dimensions.
The method depends on your specific needs and the type of orthotic being created. Stephanie’s expertise ensures we choose the optimal approach for your situation.
3. Fabrication and Customization
In our on-site lab, we transform measurements into functional orthotic devices. This involves selecting appropriate materials, creating the basic structure, adding padding and strapping systems, incorporating hinges or joints as needed, and applying finishing touches.
Throughout fabrication, Stephanie oversees quality and makes adjustments as needed. This hands-on approach ensures exceptional results that mass-production simply can’t achieve.
4. Fitting, Training, and Follow-Up
When your orthotic is ready, we don’t just hand it over and send you home. We ensure proper fit and comfort, verify biomechanical function, teach you proper use and care, and schedule follow-up appointments.
Most orthotics require some adjustment as you adapt to wearing them. We provide ongoing support, making modifications as needed to ensure optimal function. Your success is our success, and we’re committed to achieving the best possible outcome.

Sports and Activity-Specific Orthotics
Athletes and active individuals need orthotics that support without limiting performance. We create specialized devices for runners with biomechanical issues, athletes recovering from injury, workers with specific job requirements, and recreational activities requiring unique support.
These aren’t your standard orthotics with minor modifications. We design from the ground up for your specific activity, ensuring optimal performance while preventing injury.
Ropp's Post-Surgical Orthotic Support
After surgery, proper orthotic support can mean the difference between successful recovery and complications. We work closely with surgeons to provide post-operative spinal bracing, fracture bracing and support, tendon repair protection, and joint stabilization.
Our ability to create custom devices quickly means you get exactly what you need when you need it, not a generic brace that provides limited function.
